Ashley Wilks Scholarship |
|
January 24th, 2009 an unspeakable tragic event took place on the streets of downtown Portland striking the Rotary Club of Clackamas, Rotary District 5100 and Rotary International's Youth Exchange Program A senseless act of violence injured six and took the lives of two young 16 year old girls, Tika Noboa Gelgado an inbound student from Peru and Ashley Wilks, a Clackamas High School sophomore preparing for her outbound exchange as the “Ambassador” from the Rotary Club of Clackamas. The outpouring of condolences and monetary support for the Rotary Club of Clackamas Ashley Wilks Scholarship was critical in our decision to make this scholarship into a Permanent Endowment through the Rotary Club of Clackamas Foundation. This would enable us to spread the message and ideals of Ashley's passion for World Understanding and Peace.
Each year the Committee finds it very difficult to choose a recipient for this scholarship. The essays, the passion, the work done and the ideals that applicants portray have been so very "Ashley like." Ashley would be so proud and happy to know that her dream of world understanding and peace is being carried on through the efforts of young people following in her foot steps. On behalf of the Rotary Club of Clackamas Ashley Wilks Scholarship committee, thank you for support and helping us reach our goal of making this scholarship into a Permanent Endowment. In doing so, we will award a $1000.00 scholarship to one boy and one girl, to attend college and share themselves with the world thereby spreading the message of World Understanding and Peace.
